The Crest and Motto of the Sisters of Compassion

Sisters of Compassion - CrestIn 1920 the design of the crest which had been planned by Mother Aubert was submitted to and approved by the Sisters in their general chapter.

The design read: An M resting on fern leaves, surmounted by a cross with a star above. Passion flowers having their roots in the ferns and rising to the star. Underneath a motto "Caritas et Sacrificio" (translation - "Love in Sacrifice").

 

Crest Symbolism

M: To typify our Lady of Compassion at the foot of the cross

Star: Signifies - the Southern Cross

Passion Flower: Signifies our part in the salvific passion of Jesus

Ferns: Represent our being founded and grounded in the soil of Aotearoa (New Zealand)
