The Crest and Motto of the Sisters of Compassion

In 1920 the design of the crest which had been planned by Mother Aubert was submitted to and approved by the Sisters in their general chapter.

The design read: An M resting on fern leaves, surmounted by a cross with a star above. Passion flowers having their roots in the ferns and rising to the star. Underneath a motto "Caritas et Sacrificio" (translation - "Love in Sacrifice").

Crest Symbolism

M: To typify our Lady of Compassion at the foot of the cross

Star: Signifies - the Southern Cross

Passion Flower: Signifies our part in the salvific passion of Jesus

Ferns: Represent our being founded and grounded in the soil of Aotearoa (New Zealand)
