Designing the Logo and Making it into a Bone Carving

In 1992 the Sisters of Compassion celebrated 100 years since the founding of the Congregation. The centenary committee held a competition to choose a logo design. The one selected was Sister Annette Green's design derived from the Sisters' crest, which fitted the requirement for simplicity.

The idea to have the chosen design made into bone pendants or brooches, which the Sisters could wear, came about because there was a client at the Soup Kitchen who did bone carving as a hobby. At the time Sr Annette was manager of the Soup Kitchen, known then as St Joseph's Relief Centre, and Noel Minogue, a recovering alcoholic, was the guest with bone carving skills and equipment. Noel agreed to undertake the task of producing most of the 120 bone pieces, and the Sisters supplied him with a new drill set. Noel has attributed this project as a significant help towards his continuing sobriety and recovery.

The finished bone carvings were blessed at the Centenary Mass held at Island Bay-January 1992 and each sister was presented with her pendant or brooch.
