Aubert Childcare Centre’s Philosophy

Aubert Childcare Centre’s teaching philosophy sets out the guiding principles upon which teaching staff base their actions and activities in caring for children at the Centre.  The Centre’s philosophy forms a bridge, aligning the Centre’s service delivery with Mother Aubert’s teachings.

Suzanne Aubert’s Directory

We believe that children are our primary focus and each child should have their individual needs and abilities acknowledged and met.

The care given to infancy has an incalculable bearing (273.4). The whole of life is influenced by the first direction given to children (273.4).

We believe it is essential to create an environment for children that is physically and emotionally safe.

You must always treat the children with gentleness and charity, be patient with them. (275.13).

We believe that the curriculum offered to the children must be based on Te Whariki and other current educational practices that offer variety, challenge and fun

Let the Sisters always keep an open eye on the children, not in the manner of gaolers, but in the manner of Guardian Angels who love those entrusted to them, guide them, instruct them and attend to them. (p29, 94).

We believe in providing young children with developmentally appropriate opportunities to enable them to learn.

As the children grow up, prepare them to face the world, its illusions, its dangers, and its storms. Help them in everything you can. Keep yourself acquainted with all that concerns them. (p28, 90).

We believe that young children are motivated to learn through play that is facilitated when necessary.

Identify yourselves with the children. (p24)

We believe that children attending this Centre will gain social and learning skills to benefit them.

We must direct the children in the way of the future, encourage their intelligence to think and reflect, help them to become acquainted with themselves. (281.20).

We believe in equality for all and we will promote equitable opportunities throughout the curriculum.

All Sisters must identify with all children, sharing their joys and their sadness. They must always have for them an affectionate smile and a kind and cheery word. (p25).

e believe in the value of open communication and building positive partnerships with families and the wider community.

Be easy to access, receive others amiably.

We believe that children with special needs will be welcomed and integrated into the Centre.

Let our hearts overflow with charity towards everyone, especially the lowly, poor and blind. (223.57).

We believe that each culture is of value and we strive to reflect the bi-cultural nature of New Zealand within the Centre.

Me Haere tahi taua –‘ let us go together’

Never forget a Maori village was the cradle of our Institute.

We believe that staff need on-going training to continue to develop the professional skills required in early childhood education.

To know thoroughly one thing, we must know all the particulars of it. (288.3).

We believe teachers will maintain a high level of professionalism within the centre environment and model appropriate behaviours.

Children must be formed early to Christian and social virtues. That formation is the work of every day; it depends much more on example than words.

We believe in using the community and environment as a learning resource.

Let us have nothing at heart as to work for the good of all. (p261).
