The future presence at Island Bay of the Sister's of Compassion
Last month's decision to close Compassion Hospital has raised a number of questions about the ongoing presence of the Compassion Sisters at Island Bay.

Congregational Leader, Sr Rae Berry says that the Sisters will continue living in Island Bay and will maintain the chapel, crèche and archives. It is only the building that houses the hospital and rest home that is the subject of closure.

Sr Rae says that the Order's first choice would be to lease this space to someone wanting to use it in a way that is compatible with the Sisters' own mission.

She went on to say that if this doesn't happen, then somewhere down the track they may have to look at selling the building. "That is certainly not our first preference," she said. "I'm praying that somewhere out there we will find a good lessee and already we've had expressions of interest from a number of different groups."

Sr Rae has expressed the Order's gratitude for the support the Sisters have received over the years and said they are still going to be there in one way or another. Also on 30 June they are planning a special day at Island Bay for all of their friends and supporters. So, watch your parish newsletter for the details.
