As part of my ministry based at the Compassion Centre, I work with refugees and disadvantaged migrants. The circumstances they find themselves in are often very difficult with the strangeness of a new country, a lack of English language skills, the suffering from the loss of loved ones, little money and so on.

On the first of May this year Sr Annette and I set off on a journey not quite in the footsteps of Suzanne Aubert but the destination was the same – Rome; and then on to Lyon in France where Suzanne was born and lived till she was 25 years old.

When Compassion Hospital was closed in June, 2002, everyone thought that was the end of the Home of Compassion. But not so. A little dash of gold paint on the eves around the building, quickly restored our spirits again, and in April, 2003 the builders arrived to renovate the Rest Home area of the Home into living quarters for the Sisters.

On 27 May Veronica Gould and Monty Arnott made the first Bequest presentation to about 10 Upper Hutt donors at St Joseph’s Home. The invitees were specially selected from our donor database from those who had made several donations.
