Trudging the metal road to
Jerusalem
Scallop shell in one hand
White staff in the other
Pilgrimage

A bird
Trilling its little heart out
to awaken the late rising
Sun

A gaggle of geese on the
roadside
Forming a skein
Crossing the river
And becoming a gaggle again

Fish making concentric circles
in an otherwise
still pond

A tree letting go its Joseph
coat
Yet holding tightly to itself
the buds of spring

Trudging the road
to Jerusalem
Still carrying the pilgrims’ shell
Blisters on the other hand
and the enticing smell of
breakfast in the imagination
