helping build the Reservoir at Our Lady's Home of Compassion, 1907 The Sisters of Compassion welcome Volunteers. It has been part of their heritage from the tradition of Suzanne Aubert. The Sisters encourage people to share in their Mission “to care with compassion” as a way to express the call that they have heard to live the Mission of Jesus. Volunteers are with the Sisters and Staff to provide the Mission. The Volunteers give the human expression of the Mission through which others experience compassion and in turn enrich all Homes and Centres of Compassion by their presence.
Suzanne Aubert offered a vision because she captured the essence animated and unified fashioned boldly dirtied her hands accepted limitations and structures. Her method was to remodel and simplify critique and advise colour and refine. In the process she struggled and matured delighted in her work. Because she did this, she broke down barriers but at times she experienced rejection shocked society. However, in God’s time, she created a masterpiece left us an example to follow and now she challenges us to do likewise, in our own way and in our own time Our TraditionWe Sisters of Compassion have a rich tradition of responding to the changing needs of the people we serve. Throughout our 100 year history we have always been responsive to society’s call for help. Suzanne Aubert’s Mission was to restore lives to value through respect and practical compassionate care. We have been supported in our work by many who share our mission and values. The Sisters of Compassion invite you to share in our rich tradition of caring with compassion. By being and working with us, we ask you to exercise your unique gifts, in an environment that is coloured by the vision, mission, philosophy and values of the Sisters of Compassion. We want to offer a friendly environment where your contribution will be acknowledged, valued and gratefully received. With the diversity of the different groups that come together at our Homes and Centres of Compassion, we aim to provide a setting where all peoples can be and work together to meet the needs of people in the community. How to become a VolunteerAll of our Homes and Centres welcome Volunteers and in most cases it is a matter of contacting the Sisters and offering to help. However the Sisters can frequently ask for your contribution to help in some way. People have been most generous over the years and given freely of their time and talent. The St Vincent de Paul Society has worked in partnership with the Sisters for many years.
The Suzanne Aubert Compassion Centre relies on a team of volunteers who help support the work of the Soup Kitchen in Tory St, Wellington. The Centre offers training sessions for new volunteers every 3-4 months. If you would like to know more about gifting your time and talents to the Soup Kitchen click to download an information form.
Volunteers wanting to give of their time in a full capacity for a length of time of 3 - 12 months or more make an application. People from overseas have been able to be Volunteers in this way (Bridget, Jacqui, Johanna and Paul & Hazel). Please read this additional section on Overseas Volunteers.
